How To Be More Mindful

You’ve heard about being mindful before…

You’ve probably read a couple of articles about the benefits of being mindful or heard friends talking about how mindfulness has changed their lives.

But like most people you’ve probably never really tried it yourself.

Mindfulness can seem a bit intimidating.

There is no instruction manual or checklist to work through.

To be mindful you don’t have to become part of a religion or sign up to a class. To be mindful you just need to become more aware of yourself and your surroundings.

And for some people this can be difficult. There is no teacher, no targets to reach and no gold stars when you get it right.

Mindfulness is a personal journey with no score.

The easiest way to start becoming more mindful is to sit down and think about your lifestyle, then look at ways you could make it less stressful and less self indulgent.

The modern world is a hive of activity and individuals sometimes feel a bit lost or caught up in all the commotion. Practising mindfulness is a great way to slow down and be more in control of your life.

Just sitting still for a few minutes each day to gather your thoughts can help you to become a more mindful person.

Try to schedule appointments or commitments with time in between so you can sit down and calm yourself without rushing everywhere. Learn your natural breathing rhythm and be aware of how it can help you to calm down or de-stress.

Aim to be early to places you need to be so you have some unwinding time when you get there and above all…

Always make time for the places and people you love. These things will always make you a happier and less stressed person.

To be mindful you need to focus more on the positive than the negative. Acknowledge that some stuff does go wrong now and then but don’t allow thoughts (especially negative ones) to sit in your mind.

Learn to live in the moment and not dwell in the past be scared of the future. Don’t let old hang ups haunt you and don’t worry too much about what will happen in the future (spoiler alert… it will turn out ok).

Think like a mindful person. Be positive, be relaxed and be focused. Always use your concentration on positive productive activities and don’t allow yourself to be distracted by small issues.

Remember great minds do not waste time focusing on small matters. So forget about worrying about laundry or grocery shopping lists, only think about the things that are important to you.

And act like a mindful person. Be nice, try your best and do things that will make you better. Practice a sport or a hobby that gives you fulfillment.

Try yoga or meditation to help your mind and body. Both teach amazing breathing exercises that can be applied to your every day life for stress relief or relaxation.

And of course never forget to love yourself. A mindful person does not carry around the weight of negative self image. Be kind to yourself, be patient and always be present.

Being mindful may be hard in the beginning but as your journey progresses you’ll realise it is worth it.

Becoming mindful is probably the most positive change you can make in your life…
